The Faroe-Shetland Channel system is a deep-water area to the NW of the Shetland Isles. The area is famous for its historical routes in deep-sea biology with the voyages of HMS Lightning in 1868 covering this area. The region is characterised by cold water from the Arctic washing down the channel system making water temperatures lower than 0°C. The species are all characteristic of this cold-water zone, and thus are very different to their relatives from the WoS region. This area is rapidly expanding with further oil exploration planned, and we hope to see this section grow, and currently features images and video taken though our collaborations with Total E&P and Chevron UK.
