SERPENT Researcher in Deep-sea Ecology

Description: Applications are invited for a Deep-Sea Biologist. The successful candidate will work in the SERPENT team (http://www.serpentproject.com) collaborating with marine scientists in the Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Group at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton and working closely with the oil and gas industry.

You will have a PhD in a biological science and proven experience of working in the marine environment. You will be able to combine experimental studies in the laboratory with in situ observations and experiments using Remotely Operated Vehicles. A good appreciation of deep-sea ecology is highly desirable. The position requires frequent field work visits to oil rigs and other offshore platforms therefore the successful candidate must pass a medical and the relevant health and safety training courses and be willing to travel globally on a frequent basis with potentially little notice.

A proven ability to publish research and work within a multidisciplinary team is required and candidates should have the potential to develop and lead externally-funded research programmes. As part of the role, the successful candidate will be expected to be involved in the promotion of the project to industry and the general public as directed.

This post is offered as a 1-year fixed–term position in the first instance on NERC terms and conditions and is available from 7 June 2010. The salary will be in the range of £26,180 to £29,410 per annum.
