Category 5: Underwater video footage

 

1st: David Shale

Location: Gulf of Maine

Brief description of contents: Footage of Sauroteuthis syrtensis filmed on board the RV Seward Johnson in the Gulf of Maine. This animal was collected using the the Johnson Sealink submersible at around 800m using special samplers. Filmed onboard ship in a specially designed circular tank.

 

2nd: Scott McGinn

Location: West of Shetland

Brief description of contents: Rare footage of an anlgerfish hunting and catching a cod in its natural habitat


 

3rd: Tony Kastropil

Location: Gulf of Mexico

Brief description of contents: An unidentified, potentially new species of squid at 10,000 feet water depth

Brief description of contents: Footage of Nanomia cara filmed on board the RV Seward Johnson in the Gulf of Maine. This animal was collected using the the Johnson Sealink submersible at around 800m using special samplers. Filmed onboard ship in a specially designed circular tank.

Location: Norwegian Fjords

Brief description of contents: Sequence filmed in the Norwegian Fjords at a depth of 540m using the ROV Aglantha from the research ship Hakon Mosby. Footage includes a Chimera, Cerianthid and Anemone.

Brief description of contents: A squat lobster catching and eating krill. This was the first time this behaviour had been seen and resulted in the publication of a scientific paper

Brief description of contents: A swimming shrimp, possibly a new species

Brief description of contents: A very balletic swimming sea cucumber at nearly 7,000 ft water depth

Brief description of contents: A swordfish pays a swift visit to an ROV

Brief description of contents: An ocean sunfish, Mola mola, pays a visit to an ROV at a depth record of 482 meters.
